“I don’t think you want to imagine what he said,” he laughs, shaking his head. “Granted, it’s nowhere near as graphic as what he and Matt say about other people. Well, it’s mainly just Eddie now since he’s still single. I think he’s sad about the fact that Rayne left though.” he said, pursing his lips but smiling a bit when Steph said she knew he wouldn’t hurt her. He wouldn’t, not intentionally. He’d never want to. Once they reached camp, Steph practically dragged him out of the car. “I really think you’re expecting too much out of this beach trip.” he says, biting his lip. “I don’t want you to be disappointed. I’m not very romantic.” he admits, rubbing his neck as she ran ahead. He really didn’t have much planned but he knew how much she loved the lake. He figured she’d like the ocean as well.

Steph gave him a weird look, rolling her eyes at him. “Why would I ever be disappointed? That’s dumb. I’m with you! I’m not going to be disappointed,” she said and scoffed, like that was obvious. Which it was, to her. “And for the record, you’re very romantic.” She grinned and leaned up, passing his lips to give him a peck on the cheek. “Now keep up, you slow poke!” she teased and rolled her eyes, winking at him before taking off in the same direction she was going in before.

“Well, Eddie made a few sexual remarks I suppose.” he shrugs, making a face. Both Matt and Eddie were the most sexual people he knew and he knew that if Matt was single, he probably would’ve tried to seduce Steph by now. And he was glad he hadn’t, because then Jack would’ve never had the nerve to talk to her, let alone ask her out. Who would date him after having known Matt? “I’m glad you’re so sure of that. I would never mistreat you.” he says, giving her hand a soft squeeze. She was so amazing, and he felt so lucky that she’d even given him the time of day.

She laughs when he says Eddie had made some sexual remarks, because that was so like him. “Eddie is under the impression that we’ll be having sex sometime in the near future,” she says with a roll of her eyes. “So I can only imagine what he said.” She looks over and smiles at him when he promised he wouldn’t mistreat her, and she quickly nods her head. “I know, babe,” she assures him, giving his hand a squeeze as they approach the camp. She can’t help but giggle with excitement, loving that their date wasn’t over just yet. She hops out of the car and runs around to Jack’s side, quickly pulling him out of the car by his hand and running in the general direction he was telling her to go. “Ooh, I love surprises!” she squeals, contradicting her previous statement. “You’re the best!” She quickly plants a kiss on his lips, her hands wandering down his chest and she nibbles teasingly on his lower lip, forgetting her insecurity from before. She just pulls away and laughs excitedly, letting go of his had to run in front of him.

“So I told Matt we were going on a date together,” she says, starting up the conversation again after a completely comfortable pause. She releases his hand for a moment to grab something out of her jacket pocket, smiling when he reached for it again. She let him take it again,…

“Really? That’s all they said?” Steph asks with a chuckle and a fond roll of her eyes. She loves Matty and Eddie, she really did, and she thought it was adorable that they were protective of her. But she knew them and they weren’t exactly gentlemen, like Jack was. And all of a sudden, she is wondering what Jack says about her when he’s just alone with those two hooligans. “Don’t worry about them though,” she assures him, kind of loving the casual way he showed affection now. “I have no doubt in my mind that you’ll treat me right. Also, they’ll probably kick your ass if you don’t,” she teases, glancing over at him with obvious attraction and affection. She just wishes she could get inside his head easier, to know what he thought about her and their dating and everything. She’d have to bug the hell out of Matt or Eddie for that information later. Did Jack think she was funny, pretty, annoying, sexy, loud, smart? She’d never worried this much about what a guy thought about her, and it was so new.

I’m always cheeky.

Why’s that?

That’s very true.

Because I just called you the love of my life, so I mean, a compliment in return wouldn’t kill you.

He grins again when she makes her comment and winks at him, though a light blush colored his cheeks. He wasn’t sure why that was. He’d been around people who had blatantly made sexual remarks to him (Matt) but all she had to do was smile that gorgeous smile of hers and it was like the world would stop for a moment around him. His heart would race, his cheeks flushed, and he could almost feel his pupils dilate with attraction. It had never happened to him before and as she kissed his fingers and knuckles, he wasn’t exactly sure what to do. She was something else entirely and what shocked him the most was that he didn’t see her as a puzzle to solve as he did most people. He genuinely liked being surprised by her random thoughts and spontaneous ideas.

“So I told Matt we were going on a date together,” she says, starting up the conversation again after a completely comfortable pause. She releases his hand for  a moment to grab something out of her jacket pocket, smiling when he reached for it again. She let him take it again, interlacing their fingers and she figured what she had been looking for wasn’t all that important in the first place. “So he’s surely blabbed to everyone at camp by now. He hasn’t been giving you a hard time, has he?” Steph asks, envisioning Matt making Jack totally uncomfortable, which he could probably do easily. “Anyway, Jay knows and your brother knows too, thanks to that big mouth.” She chuckles and rolls her eyes, a fond smile still on her lips.

Jack listens to her guesses and laughs, shaking his head and grinning when he heard her melodic laugh follow. He loved that about her, that she was so happy. A pure, genuine happy that had no hint of cynicism, like Matt’s, or gleeful malice, like Eddie’s. Whatever she’d gone through, she’d managed to go through it with a never faltering smile and in his eyes, that was the most beautiful quality a person could possess. “You’re exactly right. The gondola ride with an Apollo child rowing, and a tiny singing crab belting out Belle Note. And once we’re out far enough, I’ll show you my fins,” he chuckles, grinning when heard her laugh again. It was an instant reaction. She laughs and his lips can’t help but turn upward in a grin.

“I knew it!” she teases, pretending to bask in her victory. “I don’t know, mermen are pretty hot.” She shrugs and then winks at him, unable to contain a small smile when he blushes the slightest bit. It was really endearing actually, how nervous he got sometimes. It was nice to know that she could still, kind of, overwhelm someone. She brings his hand to her lips again, kissing each finger, and each knuckle individually, pretending not to notice how much it was affecting him. Jack was a puzzle, alright. He shied away from being blatantly sexual on the first date, a real gentleman, but got nervous when she did something as simple as kiss his skin gently. She’d never met a guy like him before.

“And I don’t plan to until we get there,” he says, glancing over at her quickly to grin before she has a chance to look up from where she had been staring at their nearly joined hands. He bites his lower lip as he turns back to the front windshield, wondering if she was contemplating taking his hand or wanting him not to be so close. It had to be the former, though, right? She had just spent an … almost amazing night (if you don’t count the awkwardness of him all but proclaiming her easy, thinking she had wanted sex on the first date) with him and from what he could tell she wanted more dates in the future. So he inhales softly before reaching the last inch between them and lacing their fingers together, giving her hand a light squeeze before glancing at her again, a small smile on his lips.

“C’mon, that’s not fair!” she whines playfully, meeting his grin with one of her own so he knew she was just pulling his leg. He takes her hand then and she grins, her fingers perfectly interlacing with his, and she brings his hand up to quickly kiss the back of it. “Can I guess?” she asks, excited, laughing when he does. “Okay, uhm, we’re going on a romantic gondola ride? Uh, you’re secretly a merman? Uhm, you can talk to fish?” she guesses, smiling when he apparently found her funny. “Am I close?” she teases, squeezing his hand again. She looks over at him to just examine him without being caught (since he was keeping his eyes on the road and all). He really was drop dead gorgeous, and that accent oh my gods, it was a wonder no one had snatched him up yet.
